On March 15th and 16th, a gathering of passionate individuals dedicated to evangelism and discipleship convened for the Scottish Mission Discipleship and Evangelism Retreat at Dunblane Hydro. This retreat is a pivotal component of an ongoing training programme, initially known as the School of Evangelism, which has since evolved into the School of Discipleship. Under the guidance of Dr Kayle de Waal and Pr Wilfred Masih, the primary aim of this initiative is to catalyse a cultural shift within our church, placing a renewed emphasis on the significance of discipleship.
The retreat commenced on Friday with opening remarks from Pr Jimmy Botha, the President of the Scottish Mission, serving as a poignant reminder of Christ’s Great Commission: to 'go and make disciples of all nations.' Through engaging small group discussions and insightful teachings from Dr de Waal, attendees gained a deeper understanding of what discipleship entails in Scotland's post-Christian landscape.
Reflecting on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it became evident that while some churches flourished by serving their communities and fostering small group connections, others struggled as faith waned amidst the absence of regular gatherings. This disparity underscored a crucial distinction - the contrast between a mission-driven ethos and a critical, inward-focused mindset.
Drawing inspiration from Luke 5:1-11, Pr Masih emphasised Peter’s call to discipleship and Christ's directive to “launch out into the deep.” Dr de Waal reinforced the concept of starting small, mirroring Christ's method of investing deeply in a few individuals. As a result, the retreat birthed small discipleship partnerships and teams, comprising 3-4 individuals committed to nurturing, encouraging, and praying for one another regularly.
This intentional formation of discipleship teams aligns with Christ’s mandate for disciples to replicate themselves. Each attendee pledged an initial 18-month covenant to embark on this discipleship journey, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide them beyond their comfort zones and into a life of service and love, reflecting Christ’s example.
These discipleship teams will not journey alone. Pastors from the Scottish Mission and church leaders stand ready to provide ongoing support and mentoring. This relational and transformational journey hinges on prayer, seeking divine guidance every step of the way.
Our prayer is that this event serves as a catalyst for lasting change - a ripple effect poised to impact individuals, communities, and ultimately, a nation. Through intentional discipleship and evangelism, we seek to embody Christ’s love and fulfil His commission, one transformed life at a time.
May our hearts remain steadfast and our spirits attuned to the leading of the Holy Spirit. With God’s guidance, we press forward, empowered to make a difference in our world, just as Christ envisioned.
