In Search of UK Adventist Education History

In Search of UK Adventist Education History

Lorraine McDonald, BUC Education Director

Can you list all the current Adventist schools in the UK? Better still, can you list all the previous Adventist schools and where they were located? Does anyone remember Stanley Hall School in London? Yes, it did exist. I recently received photos from a former student (now in his 70s) who attended in the 1950s and currently attends our church in Grimsby. The school was near Willesden church, and the headmistress was Miss Ridger. We are seeking more stories and pictures of this school.

We are searching for the history of all our Adventist schools, past and present. Please go into the loft, speak to previous students, interview someone you know who either worked or attended one of our schools, and send us your stories, past and present. The intention is to put together a special edition of the Messenger, focussing on Adventist Education in the UK. Can you help? We would love to hear your stories and have copies of the pictures. Please pass this information on to as many people as possible.

In recognition of this exciting project, in a typical educational fashion, special prizes will be given for the oldest picture received (therefore, please date your photo on the reverse or include the date in your digital submission). We will award prizes for the most exciting story, unique memory, etc. You might even have some Adventist school memorabilia – like your school tie. Could you send us a picture of it? It would be interesting to find out who is the oldest UK Adventist teacher alive and the oldest student. Everyone can contribute, whether you currently reside in the UK or elsewhere.

We are particularly looking for the name of the first headteacher of our first school, Stanborough School. Who was that?

Our current schools are:

  • Stanborough Secondary School, Watford
  • Stanborough Primary School, Watford
  • Fletewood School, Plymouth
  • Hyland House School, London
  • Newbold School, Bracknell
  • Dudley House School, Grantham
  • Harper Bell School, Birmingham

We give advisory support to Eden School, London.

Previous schools:

  • Stanley Hall School, London
  • John Loughborough School, London
  • Grianach School, Ireland
  • Lauriston School, Leeds

We want as many details as possible, pictures, names of headteachers and other significant leaders. Please help us by sending your photographs, stories/articles, etc., to lmcdonald@adventist.uk or post to the Education Dept, British Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Stanborough Park, Watford, Herts WD25 9JZ.

Don't forget to complete our ongoing survey regarding the Future of Adventist Education in the UK. This critical survey is necessary as we consider the shaping of Seventh-day Adventist education in all its forms. Click on the link for direct access. https://adventist.uk/departments/education/future-of-adventist-education-in-the-uk/

Please also display the QR code in your church and ask everyone to complete the survey.

Your views are critical to us. We will publish the results of this survey in a special edition of the Messenger on the History of Adventist education in the UK.

Please help this project become a reality as we continue to 'Educate for Eternity'.
