Last Sabbath, three individuals affirmed their commitment to God through baptism in the River Tay in Dundee. David and Laycken, a married couple originally from South Africa, moved to Scotland about four years ago. Both of them grew up in Christian households, however, it was just over a year ago that they felt impressed to begin Bible studies with Pr Njay Ndlovu.
When asked what led them to taking this step, David shared that they had both felt the desire to realign themselves to their purpose here on Earth and to develop a deeper connection to God and His will for their lives.
To be baptised in nature was in David’s words ‘non-negotiable’. He revealed that it had been a dream of his to undergo this spiritual rite in a river, reminiscent of the path that Jesus once walked. Both David and Laycken share a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature, and initially, David had envisioned himself being baptised in the historic River Jordan. In the days preceding their baptism, David and Laycken faced a multitude of doubts and challenges. Worries about the rising tide, unpredictable weather, and logistical complexities cast a shadow of uncertainty over the preparations. Pr Ndlovu emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and ensured a comprehensive risk assessment was in place to uphold this commitment. However, against all odds, none of the anticipated challenges materialised and according to David the water was not as cold as expected either.
When asked how their life has changed over the past year, David shared how their focus and priorities have changed and a renewed sense of devotion and intimacy with God has taken root. Their journey has led them to delve deeper into the Bible in the pursuit to draw nearer to God and to know His ways. This experience has altered their approach to the truth and the gospel and they now strive to practice and live out their faith, actively testifying to God’s love and cultivating a steadfast faith.
The third individual that was baptised alongside David and Laycken wishes to remain anonymous.
Pr. Ndlovu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the three baptismal candidates. He noted that while he had conducted nature-based baptisms in the sunny Philippines before, this particular occasion posed a unique challenge due to the colder climate and uncertain weather forecast. However, as the moment arrived, so did God's grace. The weather remained tranquil, and intermittent rays of sunlight graced the candidates' faces, reinforcing their faith experience and bringing smiles to their faces.
