Aberdeen Church Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with "Wear it Pink" Event
Uniting for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Aberdeen Church held a pink-themed Sabbath of education, support, and celebration.
On Sabbath, October 25, the Health Ministries Department of the Aberdeen Seventh-day Adventist Church joined the global movement for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting a special “Wear It Pink” event. The initiative encouraged members to wear pink as a visible sign of solidarity with those affected by breast cancer and to promote awareness within the church community.
Members and guests were welcomed with pink ribbons symbolising hope and support, while the sanctuary, adorned in shades of pink, served as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and community solidarity in the fight against breast cancer.
The highlight of the day was the afternoon programme, featuring Gail Grigor, Breast Care Nurse Specialist. She delivered an informative and compassionate presentation on breast cancer, covering:
The role of a Breast Care Nurse: Providing emotional support, counselling, advocacy, and guidance for patients and families throughout their treatment journey.
Key facts about breast cancer:
The most common cancer among women in the UK, with around 55,000 diagnoses annually.
1 in 8 women will face breast cancer in their lifetime.
While most cases occur in women over 50, men can also be affected.
Risk factors: Including early menstruation, late menopause, post-menopausal obesity, alcohol consumption, and family history.
Screening and early detection: Mammograms every three years for women aged 50–70, along with self-checks and breast awareness.
Treatment options: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and clinical trials.
Practical guidance: How to check for changes, the “5 Point Care Code,” and when to seek medical advice.
Grigor emphasised that most breast changes are discovered by women themselves or their partners, highlighting the importance of regular self-examination and vigilance.
A Community United in Awareness and Action
The event was not only educational but also deeply spiritual, reminding members that caring for our health is an act of stewardship over the body God has entrusted to us. The pink ribbons, shared learning, and collective commitment to awareness fostered a strong sense of unity and compassion within the congregation.
In addition to raising awareness, the church took practical action by collecting donations to support breast cancer research, ensuring the day contributed directly to advancing medical knowledge and treatment.
The Aberdeen Church Health Ministries team expressed gratitude to Nurse Grigor for her expertise and to all members who participated. Through wearing pink, engaging in the programme, and contributing to research, the church family demonstrated its commitment to supporting those affected by breast cancer and to spreading life-saving awareness.
The day was also a joyful celebration of community and God’s creation, as members observed Creation Sabbath and honoured the birthdays of Pastor Weiers Coetser and his wife, Simone, adding an additional layer of warmth, connection, and gratitude to the meaningful occasion.
