Basic Staff Training Equips Pathfinder Leaders Across Scotland

A Basic Staff Training weekend brought Pathfinder leaders from across Scotland together for online and in-person sessions aimed at equipping leaders for effective and meaningful ministry.

This past weekend, Pathfinder leaders across Scotland gathered — virtually and in person — for an enriching Basic Staff Training (BST) programme designed to equip leaders for effective and meaningful ministry. The training blended online learning with practical activities, emphasising leadership, teamwork, and spiritual growth.

The programme began on Friday evening via Zoom and continued throughout Sabbath, with over 45 staff members participating online. Sessions on Friday focused on safety, care, and understanding the needs of Pathfinders. Topics ranged from medical care, risk management, child safety, and outdoor safety to child and developmental growth, providing leaders with practical tools and insights to support Pathfinders at every stage while emphasising safeguarding, preparedness, and responsible leadership.

Sabbath sessions explored the foundation and mission of the Pathfinder movement. Leaders reflected on the history, values, and purpose of the club, gaining a deeper appreciation of its origins. Planning and organisation were also highlighted, equipping leaders to structure their clubs effectively and prepare thoughtfully for activities. The day concluded with an exploration of Pathfinder outreach, inspiring staff to serve their communities and share Christ through meaningful action.

On Sunday, leaders met in person in Dundee for practical training and team-building activities. The focus was on developing effective teaching and communication skills, equipping leaders to engage Pathfinders in meaningful and interactive learning. The weekend concluded with drilling and marching exercises, reinforcing teamwork, discipline, and unity through hands-on, collaborative practice.

The organisers expressed their sincere appreciation to all those who contributed to the success of the weekend, including presenters Pastor Njabulo Ndlovu, Pastor Paul Tompkins, Mthokozisi Ndlovu, Bankole Davies-Browne, Michael Wright, and Joy Banda.

SM Pathfinder Sponsors, Yvonne and Paul Kanjewe, reflected positively on the Basic Staff Training weekend, describing it as a successful blend of spiritual growth, leadership development, and fellowship. They highlighted that leaders departed feeling better equipped, more confident, and united in purpose as they continue serving their Pathfinders.
