Dundee Church Emphasises Safeguarding for Individuals and Families

Promoting safe and spiritually grounded families, Dundee Church held a safeguarding seminar addressing abuse awareness, biblical principles, and practical responses for church communities.

On 4 April 2026, Dundee Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted a Family Ministries Seminar, titled “From Awareness to Restoration: Safeguarding Families.” Organised by the church’s Family Ministries department, the event highlighted the importance of creating safe, strong, and spiritually grounded families, contributing to a safe and supportive church environment.

The theme reflected a growing awareness of the need to safeguard both individuals and families within the church community. Emphasis was placed on nurturing homes that are secure, resilient, and centred on faith.

The guest speaker, Kanchan Masih, who serves as the safeguarding lead for the Scottish Mission, addressed various forms of abuse and their prevalence. Particular attention was given to spiritual abuse, described as the misuse of religious authority to control, shame, or silence individuals, affecting both faith and personal autonomy. Examples included the misuse of Scripture to justify control, pressuring individuals into forgiveness to conceal wrongdoing, and invoking God’s name to instil fear rather than promote healing.

The seminar also introduced the four key safeguarding principles: Recognise, Respond, Record, and Refer. In addition, biblical foundations for safeguarding were explored, emphasising the importance of aligning faith with positive action and recognising safeguarding as a spiritual responsibility.

Attendees also had the opportunity to engage in discussion and ask questions, contributing to an interactive and reflective learning environment.

The seminar served as an important reminder that safeguarding is not only a responsibility but a reflection of the church’s commitment to care, dignity, and Christ-like love. As awareness continues to grow, Dundee Church remains committed to fostering safe environments where individuals and families can thrive in faith and security.
