Faith and Fellowship Strengthened During Irvine Church Island Outing

Sharing faith and friendship, members of the Irvine Seventh-day Adventist Church gathered for a refreshing day of cycling and worship on the Isle of Cumbrae.

A memorable day of fellowship, faith, and outdoor activity was recently enjoyed by members and friends of the Irvine Seventh-day Adventist Church during a special outing to Millport on the beautiful Isle of Cumbrae.

The group travelled by ferry from Largs, arriving on the island full of excitement and anticipation for the day ahead. Blessed with dry weather and scenic coastal views, participants spent the day cycling around the island, enjoying fresh sea air, fellowship, and time together in God’s creation.

The Isle of Cumbrae, situated in the Firth of Clyde just off Scotland’s west coast, is reached by a short 10-minute ferry crossing from Largs to Millport. Known for its scenic coastal cycle route, peaceful atmosphere, and traditional seaside charm, the island remains one of Scotland’s most popular and accessible day-trip destinations.

The outing provided encouragement and achievement for many in attendance, particularly for some who experienced riding a bicycle for the very first time. Although there were a few challenging stretches along the route, participants supported one another throughout the journey with perseverance, laughter, and enthusiasm.

The group made use of Millport’s well-known multi-person pedal bikes to explore the island, combining exercise, teamwork, and fun as riders pedalled together around the coastal route.

One attendee reflected that the day was “full of joy, fellowship, and purpose — filled with fun, with Christ at the very centre of it all.”

Throughout the event, which was described as both "refreshing and spiritually uplifting", the group embraced the practical principles of NEWSTART: Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest, and Trust in God. The sound of bagpipes echoing across the island added a memorable Scottish touch to the atmosphere.

A picnic potluck offered an opportunity for further fellowship, conversation, and shared meals. As the group reached higher points of the island, they were rewarded with breath-taking panoramic views that encouraged moments of reflection and appreciation for God’s creation.

At the island’s highest point, the group gathered for a short devotional based on Gospel of Matthew chapter 4, reflecting on Christ’s temptation in the wilderness. The message focused on faith, perseverance, and trusting God during life’s testing moments. Singing together outdoors brought a strong sense of unity, worship, and thanksgiving.

A coastal plaque displaying Psalm 93:4 provided a meaningful point of reflection during the day’s journey around the island.

The day placed particular emphasis on supporting children and newer attendees who have been regularly attending church and beginning their walk with the Lord. Church members shared their joy at seeing young people actively participating, growing in confidence, and feeling encouraged within the church community.

More than simply a recreational outing, the day served as a reminder of the strength found in shared faith, Christian encouragement, and purposeful living. Participants returned home thankful for the opportunity to strengthen friendships, enjoy God’s creation, and encourage one another in their Christian walk.
