Glasgow Church Marks Advent Season with Reflective Worship Service
Amid the festive bustle of the season, Glasgow Church’s Advent service offered members a moment of reflection, celebrating the true meaning of Christmas through scripture, music, and the story of Jesus’s birth.
Mid-November signals the start of the Christmas season, with festive window displays, market openings, light switch-on ceremonies, and TV adverts promising magic, joy, and romance. The sights, sounds, and scents of the season are everywhere, often drowning out the true reason for the season.
On Sabbath, 13 December, Glasgow Church dedicated its worship service to reflecting on the true meaning of Advent, reminding members, young and old, that while the world focuses on the commercial and theatrical aspects of Christmas, Christians pause to remember the story of Jesus’s birth and its significance for humanity.
The children’s story focused on the biblical account of Jesus’s birth centred on a baby born in a manger, visited by the three wise men and worshipped by shepherds, as revealed by the angels. The story also emphasised that this event fulfilled prophecies given centuries earlier.
The Glasgow Adventist Gospel Choir, led by Maestro Samuel Santos, reinforced the message with songs celebrating the holy night of Jesus’s birth. The choir reminded the congregation that Heaven touched Earth in a unique way that night, bringing peace, goodwill, and visible evidence of God’s faithfulness.
In his sermon, Pastor Claudiu Popescu reflected on Joseph, a righteous man who initially planned to quietly separate from Mary upon learning of her pregnancy. He described how God intervened, revealing truths Joseph had not understood and guiding him to embrace his role in the divine plan. Pastor Popescu assured the congregation that today, God still speaks to those who are willing to listen, offering calls to repentance, trust, faith, surrender, comfort, guidance, encouragement, and reminders of His love and presence.
In the midst of the noise, distractions, and commercial pressures of the holiday season, the Glasgow Church Advent Service offered members an oasis of peace and reflection — a moment of spiritual nourishment and a reminder of the eternal truth: God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that all who believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
