Scottish Mission Strengthens Evangelism Efforts with Practical Disciple-Making Training

This article covers the recent disciple-making evangelism training sessions organised by the Scottish Mission Personal Ministries Department, which took place in Dundee and Glasgow.

The Scottish Mission Personal Ministries Department has been making significant strides in empowering churches across the region with vital training on disciple-making evangelism. On March 29, the Dundee Seventh-day Adventist Church became a hub of inspiration as it hosted the Disciple-Making Evangelism Training led by Pr Daniel Ebenezer, Associate Director of the Personal Ministries Department at the General Conference.

Pr Ebenezer opened the session with a powerful message on the importance of a mindset grounded in Missional Spirituality. He emphasised that every Christian is called to actively participate in God’s mission rather than merely being passive observers within the church. Drawing from biblical examples such as Joseph and Daniel, he highlighted how God strategically moves His people to new geographical locations for a purpose. Pr Ebenezer reminded attendees that many of them were placed in Scotland for God’s mission, a call to serve rather than settle.

One of the most profound questions posed by Pr Ebenezer was, “How much burden do you have for the salvation of others?” This challenging inquiry set the tone for the entire training, urging participants to examine their commitment to making disciples for Christ. Pr Ebenezer also addressed the unique challenges of evangelism in Western Europe, where secularism often dominates. He contrasted the non-Christian mindset, which still holds a sense of faith in a higher power, with the post-Christian mindset that dismisses the relevance of any divine presence.

Despite the perceived shift in societal values, Pr Ebenezer encouraged the attendees with stories from his own life – examples of individuals whose hearts have been transformed from secular views to a deep faith in God. This message of hope and perseverance struck a chord with many, as they realised that the spirit of God still moves within hearts, even in seemingly indifferent societies.

Practical Strategies for Disciple-Making

The afternoon session took a practical turn as Pr Ebenezer introduced the Global TMI (Total Member Involvement) Strategy. He emphasised the Church Manual’s directive that every church board prioritise developing “an active, ongoing discipleship plan.” He broke down the agricultural disciple-making process: prepare, plant, cultivate, harvest, and preserve, showing how these principles can effectively guide local churches in their mission.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage in a dynamic Q & A session, sharing their own challenges and discussing how to apply these strategies within their communities. The interactive nature of the session fostered an openness and purpose among the attendees.

A Growing Vision for Disciple-Making in Scotland

The following day, on March 30, the momentum continued at the Glynhill Hotel in Glasgow, where church leaders from the Paisley Church gathered for a second training session. This time, the focus was on fostering intentional disciple making, with church leaders expressing their dedication to implementing the Global TMI strategy within their church. Over lunch, participants exchanged ideas, asked questions, and developed concrete plans for their local churches.

A Spirit of Gratitude and Determination

Those who attended the training expressed appreciation for Pr Ebenezer’s practical insights and his passion for disciple-making. The sessions left attendees not only equipped but motivated to take on the challenge of evangelism in a changing world.
