Reflections on Crieff Church’s International Christmas Service
This article highlights Crieff Church’s youth-led Christmas service held on December 21, 2024, featuring the theme “O Come Let Us Adore Him.” Through talks, music in multiple languages, and national dress celebrations, the service emphasised God’s universal love and the church’s cultural diversity.
Crieff Church has a long history of the youth and children leading out in a special Christmas service on the Sabbath before Christmas Day. The youth and children did so again on Sabbath 21st December 2024 and the theme of their programme was “O Come Let Us Adore Him”. The programme was organised by Moyra Rodd, Angela Logan and Ela Wiech with plenty of input from the young people.
The programme comprised of three short talks which were based on a painting of the baby Jesus entitled “Little Lamb” by Jenedy Paige. The talks highlighted the manger that the baby was laid in, the swaddling cloths embroidered with symbols of the ancestry of Joseph and Mary and the acts of adoration on the night of Jesus’ birth that the famous hymn “O Come All Ye Faithful” is based on. The rest of the programme was a mixture of musical items, sung in different languages as well as ensemble pieces played on handbells. Crieff Church is blessed with several young, talented musicians and alongside the confident speakers, everyone attending was truly blessed by the morning’s service.
Crieff Church is an international church, so it was decided to ask everyone who wished to do so to wear their national dress on this special Sabbath. This helped to underline the theme of the service that the love of God is available to everyone all around the world. The array of national costumes, including full Scottish Highland wear, created many talking points amongst members and visitors and made an already special day even more special. The service was followed by a potluck lunch in the Ross Hall which was another opportunity to fellowship together.
